holy shit a fish with lungs
Sep. 15th, 2024 10:23 ami have so much stuff i wanna do 2day but im stuck in bed with freakin pots symptoms :-( so here lets learn abt creatures together. do u like creatures? good i also like creatures
so first on the docket is the red-backed salamander, which despite its name doesn't always have a red back!! there are two forms, the redback phase and the leadback phase (this one doesn't have any coloring at all). it's quite tiny and relies on covering from things like logs to keep itself cool

it looks like the conditions under which the eggs hatch (specifically cooler or warmer temperatures) can determine which type the offspring are more likely to be!! truly like a creature from a pet sim game. i love nature and the world
the two phases act differently too; the red-striped kind tends to remain still and upright when under threat by predators (prob b/c the bright coloring can dissuade the predator from eating it), while the leadback phase tries to scamper away. a study found that the leadback ones have higher rates of stress too :-( i feel ya, little guy
anyway while i was clicking around that wikipedia page i naturally hopped over to the page on cutaneous respiration (breathing through skin) to learn more about how salamanders breathe (these lil guys are too tiny. no room for lungs)
i learned that fish sometimes use cutaneous respiration to supplement their gills. and THEN i learned about a fish. with LUNGS!!!!!

look at it. look at the creature. this is a reedfish and i am so pleased to meet it. it can survive in really oxygen-poor water b/c it can just poke its head outta the water and breathe the air
ok im going 2 try to get out of bed now. thank u for reading my creature facts
